911 was released as a free download from gorillaz.com in December of 2001. The track is a collaboration between Gorillaz, D12 and ex-Specials main man Terry Hall.
911 was recorded in the aftermath of the September 11th tragedy. Detroit rap group D12 were scheduled to fly home to America from London, but were however trapped in England, and during that time went into the studio with Gorillaz to record this track. Specials legend Terry Hall also provides backing vocals. The track was available to download with full cover art so that fans could burn and package their own CDs of the track at no cost. A streaming video using Flash technology was also released.
D12 Diary written by Russel Hobbs
The day D12 met Gorillaz, probably had the same impact on ‘Kong Studios‘ that Mount Vesuvius had on the population of Pompeii (except without the lava).
The first stumbling block to creativity came when D12’s “Bizarre” asked where’s the lounge? The fact that Kong Studios chill out room was some distance from the recording studio itself seemed to present complications in the 12’s ability to gouch out and write raps. This is a problem that Murdoc attempted to smooth over by using 2-D’s credit card to buy 45 bottles of crystal champagne, 60 packets of blunts, 3 crates of Amaretto and some tortilla chips with salsa dip.
It seemed to do the job and worked commenced. What followed throughout the day can only be described as ‘creativities darkest hour’ Murdoc seemed to change into a completely different person; his actions were unfamiliar and unforgivable. He went round the studio picking up and playing every instrument he could find and then sat feverishly banging out the weirdest tunes I’ve ever heard, he even try to blow a tune into proofs Uzi, it wasn’t until the magazine was put back in that Murdoc realized what he was holding. This called for another trip to the toilet (His 15th that day)
This left 2-D trying to ‘ Man the helm ’ unfortunately 2-D wasp****d as a **** and only made the situation worse. Noodle eventually stepped in as the voice of reason and sanity, which if you think about it is crazy, seeing as she doesn’t even speak English.
Anyway the day grew old and by midnight the atmosphere had changed from sheer terror to Wanton Lewd creativity. And lets face it; anything that hits you in the face when you’re taking a dump can’t be bad.
That was pretty much all for our day with D12, however 2D and Murdoc made sure the flame of motivation was well and truly stubbed out when they decided to sing, or should I say wail, in a very drunken duet at the end of the evening.
D12 left one after another until all 12 limos, which had been parked on meters drove off in the direction of California…
