He was a seemingly well-spoken and respectful child, yet trouble seemed to always follow him. Originally attending The Xavier School for Young Achievers, he was removed forcebly after an incident which caused several fellow students to be mauled. As it would turn out, Russel had been possessed by a demon which caused him to swell twice his normal size. The demon was exorcised, and Russel was left in a coma for four years. Unable to return to his former school, Russel began to attend a public high school in Brooklyn, where he began to learn hip-hop. Most of Russel's musical talents stem from an incident in which his friends, including Del, were gunned down in a drive-by shooting. The spirits of his deceased friends took up residence in Russel, the most outspoken of which being Del, who would appear as the rapping ghost in "Clint Eastwood" In 2003, while Gorillaz were on hiatus do to an incident involving the attempted creation of a movie, the Grim Reaper began stalking Russel. Eventually, the reaper would exorcise Del's soul from Russel, nearly breaking him in the process. Russel was found by Ike Turner, who allowed him to take refuge in his basement, where Russel began working on a solo album. The process of creating his album, however, was constantly hindered by supernatural and paranormal events. Russel was the last of the Gorillaz to return to Kong to record Demon Days. After the El Manana incident, Russel was frantic about Noodle's disappearance, like 2D. According to an official mailout on October 31, 2007, Murdoc states that Russel is in Brooklyn, exploring his inner demons.
